[telepathically] Eugene Allerton: I’m not gay

Tale

In 1950s Mexico City, a forty-something American expatriate lives a solitary life in a small American community. However, the arrival of a young student inspires the man to finally make a meaningful connection with someone. Daniel Craig was ultimately the one who convinced Luca Guadagnino to cast Drew Starkey after watching audition tapes with Guadagnino and telling him “That’s the guy” after seeing Starkey.

I’m not gay

Lee… William Lee: I know. Eugene Allerton: I’m just disembodied.

Along with Orfej (1950)

This is one of the most boring and pretentious films I’ve seen in years. Except for the soundtrack, which tries to breathe life into this otherwise contrived and stale story of an old gay man going through his depressing search for meaning in his life. Extremely slow pace, pseudo-intellectual dialogues, caricatured representation of gays in the 50s, the film seems to want to show how lost homosexuals were in those years.

Daniel Craig plays the anti-hero

Drug addict, sexually impotent, he floats in an unreal world, desperately looking for an anchor point. He is sad and pathetic. The film can be seen as the trash version of Luchino Visconti’s famous masterpiece Death in Venice.

It could have been called Death in Mexico

After the highly acclaimed Call me by your name, the director seems to be mistaken in producing a new work of value.
